What you need to know
Location

The Cascades Female Factory Historic Site is situated in the country of the Muwinina people, nestled at the base of kunanyi/Mount Wellington, in South Hobart, Tasmania. Interwoven are the First Nation’s stories of Palawa, a culture that is over 40,000 years old and which was so gravely impacted by British colonisation.

The Cascades Female Factory was once a bustling, crowded convict institution that could house up to 1,000 women at any given time. Today, it is a quiet sandstone-lined historic site tucked away in the leafy suburb of South Hobart.

Using three different audio narratives, this self-guided experience immerses visitors into the sounds and stories of the Female Factory as they happened almost 200 years ago. The audio tour has up to 2 hours of listening content however you are welcome to stay and explore the site for as long as you wish.

The audio guide is included in the cost of entry to the site and can be downloaded using your own phone or smart device. Remember to bring your mobile phone well charged and some comfortable headphones.
